Can Clinical Hypnosis Really Change the Brain?

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“What actually happens in the brain during hypnosis?”

For many years hypnosis was surrounded by myths. Some people believed it involved mind control or a mysterious trance. Today, modern brain imaging allows researchers to observe what happens in the brain while a person is experiencing hypnosis.

Although scientists continue to study hypnosis, the evidence suggests that hypnosis is associated with measurable changes in brain activity, attention, perception and the way the brain processes information.

This article explains what current research tells us and why these findings are important for clinical hypnosis.


The Brain Is Designed to Change

The human brain is not fixed.

Throughout life it continually adapts through a process known as neuroplasticity.

Every new skill…

Every habit…

Every memory…

Every emotional experience…

creates or strengthens connections between brain cells.

Think about learning to drive.

At first every movement requires conscious effort.

Eventually driving becomes automatic.

The brain has literally changed through learning.

The same principle applies to many habits such as smoking, emotional eating, anxiety responses and negative thinking.

Clinical hypnosis does not magically rewire the brain overnight.

Instead, it attempts to work with the brain’s natural ability to learn and adapt.

One of the defining characteristics of hypnosis is focused attention.

During hypnosis, people often become less distracted by unrelated thoughts and more engaged with specific ideas, sensations or therapeutic suggestions.

Functional MRI studies suggest that hypnosis is associated with changes in several brain networks involved in attention and awareness.

Researchers have observed changes in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, a region involved in attention, emotional regulation and monitoring conflict.

Other studies have identified changes involving the Default Mode Network, which becomes active during self-reflection and mind wandering.

During hypnosis, activity within these networks may change, allowing attention to become more focused on therapeutic goals.

These findings help explain why people often report becoming deeply absorbed during hypnosis while remaining aware of their surroundings.


Pain Is Created by the Brain

Pain is often misunderstood.

Although pain usually begins with signals from the body, the experience of pain is ultimately created by the brain.

Research has shown that hypnosis may influence how the brain processes pain signals.

Brain imaging studies have demonstrated changes in activity within areas responsible for pain perception, including the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Insula, and parts of the Somatosensory Cortex.

This does not mean hypnosis cures every painful condition.

Therapeutic suggestions encourage the brain to develop different expectations about situations that previously triggered anxiety, smoking, stress or unwanted habits.

Rather than viewing suggestions as “mind control,” modern neuroscience increasingly views them as influencing attention, expectation and perception.


The Brain Learns Through Repetition

Every time we repeat a behaviour, the brain strengthens the neural pathways associated with that behaviour.

Large systematic reviews have found evidence supporting hypnosis in areas including pain management, medical procedures, anxiety and several behavioural health applications.

Researchers also emphasise that evidence varies according to the condition being treated.

Clinical hypnosis should therefore be viewed as one evidence-based therapeutic approach rather than a universal solution for every problem.


Why This Matters

Understanding what happens inside the brain helps remove many of the myths surrounding hypnosis.

Clinical hypnosis is not magic.

It is not supernatural.

It is not sleep.

Instead, it appears to involve measurable changes in attention, perception and brain activity that may support therapeutic change for some individuals.

The more we understand how the brain works, the better we can understand why some people benefit from clinical hypnosis and why responsible practitioners rely on evidence rather than exaggerated claims.
